History
The Northwest Detroit Youth Coalition (NWDYC) is a non-profit collaboration of Youth
Agencies formed in 1996 to enhance opportunities for youth residing in the Northwest Detroit Area. The following barriers were identified
preventing youth participation in organized sports and extracurricular programs:
· Poor communication of youth opportunities
available
· Lack of transportation
· Few trained leaders
· Lack of financial support
· No community plan or vision to identify
needs and how to connect youth and parents with resources needed
A steering committee of 18 members and an advisory committee with representation from area agencies serving youth and
local businesses were formed to address these barriers.
